Peptide cocktails show promise in combating antibiotic resistance
Antibiotics are crucial for treating bacterial infections, but their overuse has led to rising antibiotic resistance, a major public health threat. A recent PLOS Biology study stresses the need for new strategies to combat this issue, emphasizing proper antibiotic use, rapid diagnostics, and innovative antimicrobial agents. Research led by Prof. Zvi Hayouka and Prof. Jens Rolff found that random antimicrobial peptide mixtures significantly reduce resistance evolution compared to single peptides, maintaining or improving drug sensitivity. These mixtures showed promise in preventing resistance and are cost-effective and non-toxic in mouse models. Further research is needed to explore their interaction with the host immune system.
